Youth

Photo by Mohammad Ali Mohtashami on Unsplash

What is this youth
but the outer layer
of armor, shaped
and hammered into place,
until with time’s lagging
it is broken down
and the soft tissue
of wisdom can stand
unexposed to the chill
air; without pretense
or being anything other
than what it is, aged
and worn in
by the world’s relentless
attempts to entreat us
to meet it more
openly, without fear. . .
